Roland Hill (1919-1979)

Roland Hill RUA was born in Belfast in 1919 (although some sources quote 1915). When Hill was just fourteen years old he left school to work, but attended night classes in Belfast. He exhibited at the Ulster Academy of Arts when he was only sixteen years old. He received encouragement and guidance from James Humbert Craig and Roland’s subject matter consists mainly of typical landscapes, especially in places such as Donegal. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Ulster Academy in 1964 and exhibited a total of 17 works at the Royal Hibernian Academy between 1935 and 1966. He exhibited at the Magee Gallery, Belfast and the Cooling Galleries, London and Toronto. He died in 1979.
