Sir Hubert Herkomer (1849-1914)
Highly versatile artist. As well as painting in oils and watercolours, he was a printmaker, designer,teacher and writer. Came to England with his father in 1857 from Germany. Became a highly successful and prolific portrait painter, although he had already made his reputation around 1875 with paintings of social concern which was something of a new departure for art at that time.
