Myles Birket Foster R.W.S. (1825-1899)

Myles Birket Foster was a popular English engraver, illustrator and watercolour artist of the Victorian period. Foster was born in North Shields but came to London aged 5. He began his career at 16 as an apprentice wood engraver, then draughtsman, before setting up as an independent illustrator and self-taught watercolourist. A prolific illustrator, he provided hundreds of book illustrations notably ‘Pictures of English Landscapes’ (1863).  Hugely successful in his own lifetime, exhibiting over 400 works at the galleries of the Old Watercolour Society (elected member in 1862, today the Royal Watercolour Society) as well as 16 at the Royal Academy, 15 of which were oil paintings.
